Think Ahead About Automation in P&IDs!

On April 29, 2026, the VDI Expert Forum “Modular Plants in the Process Industry” invites specialists and executives from the process industry as well as the mechanical and plant engineering sectors. Among other topics, the forum will cover VDI 2776, modular system planning, cost-effectiveness, and practical reports from the operator’s perspective. At the same time, it offers an ideal platform for exchanging ideas with peers and experts and provides practical insights into the flexible planning, automation, and orchestration of modular plants.

As part of the program item “Experiences in Planning, Automating, and Orchestrating Modular Plants”, Wolfgang Welscher will speak alongside Dr. Michael Nussbaumer from Pruess about forward-looking automation of modular plants directly in the P&ID.

Thinking Ahead: Automation of Modular Plants in the P&ID

• Experience report on the workflow: from P&ID to POL (Process Orchestration Layer) – planning process and potential

In addition to the presentations, there is an extensive hands-on session where visitors can gain their own hands-on experience with the demonstrators. We will show how modular plants can be planned, automated, and orchestrated using our P&ID software PlantEngineer. All steps—from the use of Colored P&IDs to the definition and export of Modular Type Packages (MTP) and on to the functional specification for automation and orchestration—will be clearly demonstrated.
