VDI Expert Forum “Modular Plants in the Process Industry.”

Think ahead about automation in P&ID!

On April 29, 2026, the VDI Expert Forum “Modular Plants in the Process Industry” invites specialists and executives from the process industry as well as mechanical and plant engineering. The forum will cover topics such as VDI 2776, modular system planning, cost-effectiveness, and practical reports from an operator’s perspective. At the same time, it offers an ideal platform for exchange with like-minded people and experts and provides practical insights into the flexible planning, automation, and orchestration of modular plants.

As part of the program item “Experiences in planning, automating, and orchestrating modular plants,” moderated by Michael Heeger (BASF SE), our managing director Wolfgang Welscher will speak with Dr. Michael Nussbaumer (Pruess) about the forward-looking automation of modular plants directly in P&ID.

The presentation will focus on the following topics:

• the planning and definition of Modular Type Packages (MTP) including services and parameters directly in the P&ID,
• the use of colored P&IDs for clear visualization,
• and a practical experience report on the workflow from P&ID to Process Orchestration Layer (POL) – including insights into planning processes and their potential.

In addition to the presentations, there will be an extensive practical section in which visitors can gain hands-on experience with the demonstrators. We will show how modular plants can be planned, automated, and orchestrated using our P&ID software PlantEngineer. All steps will be clearly demonstrated, from the use of colored P&IDs to the definition and export of Modular Type Packages (MTP) to the functional description for automation and orchestration.
