LiDAR2BIM project meeting
LiDAR2BIM project meeting – progress and results
Efficient digitization for construction and facility management
At the project meeting at HTW Berlin on February 25, 2025, important progress and initial results from LiDAR2BIM were presented. The joint project is developing an innovative solution for the digital recording and redesign of technical facilities by combining LiDAR technology and BIM methods. The aim is to offer small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) a cost-effective way to efficiently document and optimize their existing facilities.
Results presented
- Automated creation of 3D models from LiDAR scans for faster inventory taking
- Initial integration of LiDAR data into BIM Light to automatically add missing objects
- Optimization of the Open BIM workflow to enable more efficient collaboration across different software solutions
- Pilot applications for the redesign of technical facilities – with a focus on energy efficiency and operating cost reduction
Why LiDAR2BIM?
Technical facilities must be regularly adapted to new requirements – whether for energy efficiency measures, operational optimizations, or adjustments to new production processes. Currently, however, redesign requires a lot of manual effort, as existing documentation is often incomplete or outdated. LiDAR2BIM provides a digital, automated solution.
Technology in focus: LiDAR + Open BIM
- LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser scans to generate 3D point clouds and create digital models from them.
- BIM (Building Information Modeling) supplements existing documentation with placeholder objects from the LiDAR scans.
- Open BIM enables open data exchange that connects different software solutions and disciplines.
Project goals and benefits
- Faster and more accurate inventory of buildings and facilities
- Reduction of planning errors through better digital modeling
- Cost reduction and increased efficiency, especially for SMEs
- More flexible and future-proof solutions for various industries
